In the religious feasts (panegyria) of the Aegean islands music, song, dance, food and drink are inextricable part of a ritual in which the whole community participates. After the church service, person old, men, women and children join in the celebration held as members of a single social group which thus declares its presence and its cohesion. As a social event, the panegyri, this important element of Greek tradition, concentrates life and culture to a degree rarely encountered in other events. Each panegyri becomes a mirror of local culture.
